Last
February, I had the opportunity to coach a United
States National Wrestling Team in competition in the
Republic of Iran. I was pleasantly surprised by the
hospitality the US delegation received from the
Iranian people. Although we had two bodyguards
assigned to our team, I felt comfortable and safe with
the Iranian people. I found them to be curious and
interested in learning as much as they could about the
"Americans" during our brief stay.
It
was great to be around elite athletes from around the
world. They possess a unique confidence, strong
character and work ethic that I find contagious. They
love competition and focus their efforts to be
successful. It reminded me of a saying I believe
successful athletes/people hold fast to.
- The will to
win
- The heart to
fight
- The ability
to lose
- The spirit
to fight again

In
light of the current economic times, I believe we can
all learn something from the above phrase. American
industry is competing against a different kind of
competitor (global competition) and I believe the
fight will get more competitive.
The
will to win
- Assess
the situation
- Take
charge--set goals for yourself, family and
work/business
- Preparation--
it is often said there is less traffic on
the second mile of a journey
- Commitment
to improve your skill set and work ethic
- Sharpen
skills and attitude
|
The
heart to fight.
- Do the
basics well
- Focus
on task at hand
- Intensity
in effort
- Confident in
approach
- Be concerned
with the outcome
|
The
ability to lose
- Not going to
win all the battles
- There will
be failure in our lives
- Understand
what happened in failure
- Look for
positives and win-win scenarios
|
The
spirit to fight again
- Refocus,
reenergize and recommit
- Bounce back
with a better plan
- Bounce back
with a better effort
- Do the right
thing--no shortcuts
- Personal
continuous improvement
- Determination
and a don't quit attitude

This
is a difficult time for many individuals and
organizations. Use this time to position yourself and
business to compete successfully in the future. Invest
in the future, invest in your family, and invest in
people. Now is more important than ever to reassess
and improve upon your time management, priority
management and people management skills.
USA
wrestling has asked me to take a team to Iran again
this year. I think I'll stay home….
It’s a different world!
