Definition: Waste

Any activity that consumes resources and produces no added value to the product or service a customer receives.

There are seven types of manufacturing waste:

1. Production over immediate demand
2. Excess work in progress and finished goods inventories
3. Scrap, repairs and rejects
4. Unnecessary motion
5. Excessive processing
6. Wait time
7. Unnecessary transportation
