Filter Changes

May 3, 2009

Filters are typically changed either on a time based method or on differential pressures. The time based method has its obvious drawbacks; either it’s changed too late or too soon. Changing filters out when there is a specific pressure differential is better, but what if the filter is damaged and has a hole in it? Well, that filter can look perfect forever.

The best way to deal with filter changes is using the pressure differentials and indicators as well as using particle counts. By sampling both before the oil passes through the filter element and after on a regular basis you can confirm if your filter is damaged and that the filtration system is working adequately.
