Testing AC Variable Frequency Drives
It is possible to test your motors online using Current Signature Analysis (CSA) and Electrical Signature Analysis (ESA) with VFD’s controlling your motors. When performing this analysis downstream of the VFD, you have to take into account the fundamental frequency supplied to the motor from the VFD. Using both CSA and ESA, you get valuable information on the health of your motor and the VFD itself. By setting the motor up with two profiles, one for the input and one for the output section of the VFD, you can monitor and trend the health of the input/output semi-conductors, plus the gate drive circuit output of the inverter.
When you are performing offline testing, always remember to disconnect your VFD from the motor.
